Trees were swaying, and windows were rattling as a powerful cold front swept across New Jersey Wednesday night — whipping up winds that toppled trees and sparked tens of thousands of power outages.
Gusts as strong as 63 mph were reported at Newark Liberty International Airport in Essex and Union counties, and a gust of 62 mph was clocked near Keyport in Monmouth County, according to the latest wind reports from the National Weather Service.
Winds have continued to remain brisk Thursday morning, although gusts haven’t been as intense as they were late last night. The most noticeable change for anyone going outside is the sharp temperature drop — from the low 60s in the early evening to the upper 20s and low 30s in the morning, with wind chill readings in the high teens to low 20s.
Here’s a look at the top wind gusts reported across New Jersey Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, with data provided by the weather service’s two regional offices and the Rutgers NJ Weather Network.
