'Teams are panicking': Barry Bannan discusses the 'powerful thing' Sheffield Wednesday have right now

Sheffield Wednesday are now adrift only on goal difference, following a run of four-straight wins in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday remain in 23rd place of the Championship table, but the Owls are now level on points with Stoke City and Huddersfield Town, with Birmingham City and QPR only a point ahead.

Danny Rohl watched his side beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 on Tuesday night; the Green Army sit in 16th but are only two points ahead of Wednesday.

In fact, Sheffield Wednesday are only seven points behind Watford up in 12th, and having closed an eight-point gap to safety over the past few weeks, current form suggests that the Owls could finish well above the drop zone this season.

Barry Bannan says ‘teams are panicking’

Before, it was Huddersfield Town who Sheffield Wednesday were chasing.

They were the team that sat just above the drop zone, with the Terriers, QPR, Wednesday and Rotherham United by far the lowest teams in the league.

So the fact that there’s now just two points separating Plymouth in 16th and the Owls in 23rd, and less than 10 points between Sunderland in 10th and Wednesday, is astonishing.

Sheffield Wednesday along with QPR have picked up form in recent weeks and opened the relegation picture wide open.

Speaking on talkSPORT this morning with Alan Brazil and Gabby Agbonlahor, Owls skipper Barry Bannan discussed how the bottom of the table is looking right now, saying:

“I think, like Gabby [Agbonlahor] said, teams are panicking now. The thing about us is that we’ve got momentum at the right time of the season. I think if you’ve got that momentum going into the last ten games, it’s a powerful thing.”

He continued: “We’re winning games and the teams around us are starting to drop and fall back. We’re just on a good roll at the minute and we want to keep that for as long as possible.”

Momentum is a ‘powerful thing’ for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday certainly have a lot of teams worrying right now, like Bannan says.

The Owls’ form in recent weeks has spurred on QPR to pick up wins, with Millwall doing better of late, and those three have now forced a horde of teams into the dog fight.

It’s all to play for now, but Sheffield Wednesday are the ones with the momentum right now.

They’re chasing a fifth-straight win in the Championship against Leeds United at Hillsborough on Friday night and the Whites will certainly be wary of playing Rohl’s men right now.

Not only are the Owls winning games but they’re winning them comfortably; although the last two scorelines wouldn’t suggest so, Wednesday were wrongly denied a goal against Rotherham and then again v Plymouth.

It’s far from over, but Sheffield Wednesday are in a very good position to maintain their Championship status now.
