'I messaged him': Clinton Morrison raves about 'outstanding' Leeds United star, he's a joy to play with

Ethan Ampadu was handed the man of the match award for his performance in Leeds United’s 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night and Clinton Morrison has heaped praise on him.

Ampadu, 23, continued in the middle of the defence at Hillsborough alongside Joe Rodon and the duo combined once again to secure a ninth clean sheet in 12 Championship matches. Conceding just three.

Wednesday were the better side in the first half, but it was a Patrick Bamford goal in the latter stages of the first half that proved to be the difference. A gorgeous cross from Junior Firpo, setting up Bamford.

Then, shortly after the break, Bamford and Georginio Rutter combined to set-up Willy Gnonto – who made it 2-0. A really solid win, given Wednesday’s form. Ampadu was super, winning man of the match.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the win over Wednesday, former Ireland star Morrison heaped praise on Ampadu – saying he even text the Wales star before the game and labelling him “outstanding”.

“I messaged him, must’ve checked his phone before. Outstanding, normally in midfield but good players adapt. Quality in possession, big blocks, a leader. I’m not a manager, but he must be a joy to play with.”

Ampadu was sensational. He carried the ball out of defence on numerous occasions before finding a teammate, making numerous blocks and winning headers. A near-perfect display from the Welshman.

It is going to be interesting to see what Daniel Farke does when Pascal Struijk returns to full fitness – because Ampadu’s form, combined with Ilia Gruev’s performances in midfield, might keep him out.
