'We're delighted': Gareth Southgate has just made fresh claim about Anthony Gordon in England video

Anthony Gordon was delighted to be named in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad and you can’t say it wasn’t deserved.

Gordon has been performing at a very consistent level for Newcastle this season and supporters have been petitioning for him to be part of the squad for months now.

In an interview with England, Southgate claimed that Gordon was actually close to a call-up back in November and that he feels his experiences in the Champions League have really benefitted his game.

Gordon could have been playing for England months ago

Given the lack of in-form players England currently have on the left side of the attack, it’s a surprise really that Gordon wasn’t included in any of the three previous England squads this season.

The winger has been Newcastle’s most important player this season in a campaign where he’s had to carry the team a lot of the time due to so many injuries, and yet his work ethic has never once wavered.

He would have been forgiven for wanting a bit of a break, especialy in December when he was having to play a full 90 minutes every three days travelling around Europe, but that’s just not the type of person he is.

Gordon’s efforts have finally paid off with the latest England squad being announced last Thursday, and it’s been a long time coming for the young attacker who can now try and make that spot his own.

On Gordon, Southgate said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jarrad Branthwaite and Anthony Gordon for the first time. Anthony has been on our radar for a little while, he was very close in November, he’s had that experience in the Champions League with Newcastle this year.

“His performances have been consistently good. He scores goals, he works hard for the team, so really looking forward to seeing him with us.”

Gordon can take his game to the next level for Newcastle

It’s been a major breakthrough season for Gordon who has played his first European games and is now getting a taste of first-team action with England which was his main goal at the beginning of the campaign.

These experiences will only benefit the winger who has already enjoyed huge progress under Eddie Howe and will be hoping to go one step further next season and become even more pivotal to Newcastle.

There’s little to play for in the rest of the season for Newcastle, but for Gordon he’s got to keep impressing Southgate and make sure he books himself on that plane to Germany.

Hitting double figures in the Premier League for the first time would be a big achievement , and he’s only one away now, but knowing Gordon’s attitude he’ll want to do even better.
