'Proper pro': Roy Keane names the two Nottingham Forest players he really wanted to be like when growing up

Roy Keane has named two Nottingham Forest legends that he looked up to when he was playing for the City Ground outfit.

The Sky Sports pundit has been speaking on the Stick to Football podcast and he’s been explaining two very different reasons why he wanted to be like a couple of players.

Keane moved from Cobh Ramblers to play forForest in 1990. He spent three years at the club and made 154 appearances for the Reds before moving to Manchester United.

Well, it won’t come as too much of a surprise that one of the players that Keane looked up to was Stuart Pearce. The former England defender just oozed professionalism and to this day he’s still respected in the game.

The man who played 67 times for the Republic of Ireland has also picked another defender out as a player he wanted to be like when he was at Forest.

Keane told theStick to Football podcast: “When I was a young player at Forest you would look for senior players and I would see Pearcey and he was a proper pro.

“Whereas I would be out in Nottingham at nighttime and would see Des in these bars and be like I want to be like Des and I want to be like Pearcey as well!”

Keane included in Nottingham Forest greatest eleven

During the 2015/16 campaign as part of the club’s 150-year celebrations, the Forest fan base voted for the greatest eleven of all time, with Keane getting into the midfield.

Alongside him, the European Cup-winning captain John McGovern was named alongside him, with Pearce naturally getting the nod from the supporters at left-back.

Walker was also included in the team, with Kenny Burns named as the other central defender.

All three served Forest with distinction during their careers and even though Keane left for Manchester United, it still didn’t deter the supporters from naming him in the greatest eleven.

Forest could do with one or two in their ranks akin to Keane right now. The club were deducted four points earlier this week and it’s now going to be a real battle to stay in the Premier League during 2023/24.
