Report: West Ham have just entered the race for £26m playmaker, already at the front of the queue

Albert Gudmundsson is one of a number of breakthrough stars in this season’s Serie A, as he shines in a Genoa shirt – alerting attention from a number of Premier League clubs ahead of the summer.

Gudmundsson, 26, has been excellent for Genoa. The 35-time Iceland star has a specific style, roaming about the pitch with his socks low, Jack Grealish style. Aggressive, passionate, incredibly technical.

This season, he is in the form of his life. He has had a hand in 16 goals in 29 games for Genoa. Such form is all the more impressive given Genoa sit way down in 12th place in Italy’s top tier in 2023-24.

It comes after scoring 15 goals in 50 games prior to this season, for Genoa. So, a top player in a mid-table side. He deserves to be playing a lot higher, at least for a club that are in European competition.

West Ham join race for Genoa playmaker Albert Gudmundsson

They are not the only Premier League club showing interest. London rivals Tottenham are also said to have enquired after the Iceland attacker – who has a £26m release clause in his contract at Genoa.

You would imagine that Spurs are well-positioned to get him. They have just done a deal with Genoa, which saw Radu Dragusin join the club – while Djed Spence has gone to Gudmundsson’s side on loan.

But, a new report from Italian site CM claims that West Ham have joined the race to land Gudmundsson and are alongside Tottenham at the front of the queue for his signature. Juventus and Inter are keen.

Certainly, his bargain release clause is only going to generate more interest between now and the end of the season. But would he start for Spurs? A move to West Ham would see him remain first choice.

What has been said about Albert Gudmondsson, an Arsenal fan…

Indeed, Gudmundsson has said in the past that he is an Arsenal fan. Hardly one to stop a move to Spurs but one that will instantly have fans worried. Not something that will deter West Ham in a possible move.

Gudmundsson – who is best as a 10 or playing off a no.9 but can play out wide, too – has been likened to Mo Salah by Kevin Strootman. He shares an agent with Dragusin, as well as stopper Guglielmo Vicario.

With West Ham possibly preparing to wave goodbye to Lucas Paqueta with Manchester City’s interest still present – the Hammers will be in the market for a playmaker. Gudmundsson fits the Hammers bill.

Especially, as West Ham will likely rake in a near-£100m fee for Brazil star Paqueta. They can get a top replacement for a quarter of that. Spurs cannot let West Ham land the ace without putting up a fight.
