'Brilliant', 'Exuded confidence': Nations media blown away by £30m Liverpool player's performance last night

Liverpool have a number of players playing international football in the final break of the Premier League season.

Joe Gomez got on for England last night while Alexis Mac Allister was praised for his performance for Argentina. Luis Diaz also enjoyed a fine performance as Colombia beat Spain in London.

On the flipside, Cody Gakpo was criticised for his performance for the Netherlands.

But nevertheless, it’s been a successful enough break so far for Liverpool’s players and another one of their top men continued that trend last night.

Liverpool man shines on international duty

One of the players to play last night was Liverpool number two but Republic of Ireland number one, Caoimhin Kelleher.

The£30m-rated stopper kept a clean-sheet against Belgium. And to the delight of the Irish media, he was very much praised for his performance.

“Got the nod over Gavin Bazunu and showed impressive composure to beat Lois Openda with a sweet Cruyff turn early on. Wasn’t tested in the opening half but denied Thomas Meunier with an excellent save on 75 minutes,” The Irish Independent wrote.

“Given the opportunity to impress after his recent strong run of form at club level, Kelleher exuded confidence whenever he had the ball at his feet. He didn’t have a save of note to make in the first half, although he would make one brilliant save in the second half to keep his team level,” Balls.IE wrote.

“Passed the ball out with authority and control while Belgium pressed high into the final third. A solid performance from a goalkeeper who only made one ‘real’ save during the 90 minutes – a terrific stop to deny Thomas Meunier in the 76th minute,” RTE said.

Caoimhin Kelleher impressed for Republic of Ireland v Belgium

As has been the case for Liverpool in recent weeks as he’s stood in for Alisson, Kelleher produce the goods for Ireland last night.

A clean sheet against Belgium, who are ranked as the fourth best side in the world by FIFA, is not to be sniffed at.

As mentioned in the ratings, Kelleher made a crucial save from Thomas Meunier to keep the scores level and he showed just why Liverpool trust him so much.

The problem for Liverpool is that Kelleher will want regular football to keep his spot as Ireland’s number one. That might mean a sale in the summer.

Kelleher is good enough for most teams in the league and on this performance last night, deserves to be a number one somewhere.
