'Incredible': Alan Shearer amazed by what 20-year-old attacker Newcastle want has done on international duty

Alan Shearer was really impressed with what one Newcastle United target did this weekend while on international duty.

Newcastle have had a bit of a busy international break with Anthony Gordon making his England debut against teammate Bruno Guimaraes at Wembley.

They could have also had their eye on a few other games as Shearer was watching one in particularly involving an exciting attacker who has been on Newcastle’s radar this season.

Shearer blown away by Newcastle target this weekend

There were a few quick goals during this international break with Martin Dubravka having conceded one after just seconds from kick off against Austria, a new record at international level.

There was another scored in the France vs Germany game just one second later as Florian Wirtz found the top corner with a brilliantly struck effort to give Julian Nagelsmann’s side a very early lead.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer was left amazed by the goal that Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Wirtz scored amid links that Newcastle could be looking to sign him.

The Magpies first registered their interest in the 20-year-old over a year ago now, though other top clubs have taken notice of his incredible form over in the Bundesliga having recorded 17 goal contributions this season with Leverkusen still unbeaten.

On Wirtz, Shearer said: “Did you see the goal? It was incredible. The way he stepped off the defender from the kick off and got the ball and turned and smashed it in. What a start and what a goal it was for them.”

Wirtz would be perfect option for Newcastle

Newcastle are really lacking something special at the minute having struggled for form in the last few months which has seen them drop down the Premier League table and are now at risk of being bottom half.

Wirtz could provide that bit of spark that Newcastle are missing and help to drive them forwards again, and he’s already got Shearer’s mark of approval this season.

Although Eddie Howe doesn’t typically play with a traditional number 10 in his team, Wirtz can also operate on either wing if he is needed to, though there may be an option to adapt the team to fit the German international.

It would no doubt be a big money signing given that Wirtz still has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027, but it’s one that could prove to be hugely successful if he continues on this current trajectory.
