'Really excited': Gary O'Neil admits he just can't wait to see £4.5m Wolves player in pre-season

Gary O’Neil has said that he is particularly excited to see Yerson Mosquera in Wolves pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The central defender has been on loan with Villarreal since January, having previously spent a year with MLS club FC Cincinnati.

The Colombia international enjoyed a really productive spell in the States, making 35 appearances in total. The idea was for Mosquera to play as much as possible, after sustaining a serious hamstring injury in his first season at Wolves.

He has now been sent to Villarreal, which is obviously a real step up.

So far, he’s made nine appearances for the Spanish outfit and has caught the eye. Raul Albiol said recently that he thinks the Wolves youngster has a great future ahead of him.

Ultimately Wolves see him as a future first-teamer, and O’Neil has already opened the door for his return…

O’Neil is keen to make additions this summer, after a pretty tricky first season at Molineux in terms of squad size.

He has worked wonders, but it has not been easy for him having a small squad.

He’ll be able to spend money a bit more freely this summer, but he is definitely keen to take a look at Mosquera in pre-season to see if he’s first team-ready.

He said (via E&S): “They’re on the list who aren’t here and not helping us at the moment but that doesn’t mean they won’t come back and help us next season.

“There are two options: They come back and help us or they come back and go somewhere else and each case will be decided separately.

“I’ll be really excited to see Yerson Mosquera in pre-season because I think he can help us so let’s see what he does at Villarreal.

“He’ll come back and we’ll have a look at him in pre-season and there will be a few like that and I’m sure there will be a few who will be keen to move on.”

Mosquera returning to Wolves is exciting

It will be really interesting to see how Mosquera fares between now and the end of the season with Villarreal.

He’s in a more challenging league now and it should be really good for his development.

He’s made an impression already which is good news, and Wolves fans ought to be quite excited about his return. Mosquera got so unlucky suffering that hamstring injury on his competitive debut for the club.

In the pre-season after he first signed for £4.5 million he looked really promising, with a good aggressive style and decent ball-playing.

Hopefully, he can return to the club and prove himself to O’Neil and finally get his Wolves career underway.
