'Special moment': 23-year-old Sheffield Wednesday ace reacts to making 'history' during int'l break

Sheffield Wednesday’s Di’Shon Bernard has taken to Instagram after making history during the international break.

Di’Shon Bernard has gone from strength to strength since leaving Manchester United last summer.

The defender had spent six years with the Red Devils but failed to make a senior appearance before signing for Sheffield Wednesday.

Bernard enjoyed a brilliant summer, having already made his debut for the Jamaica national team just a month before arriving at Hillsborough.

He was then named in their final 23-man squad for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup and has since racked up a total of 13 caps.

Bernard’s promising debut season for the Owls has earned him a regular place in the national team, having started five of Jamaica’s eight games in the Nations League.

The Reggae Boyz had reached the Nations League Finals this month, with the centre-back playing the full 120 minutes of an extra-time defeat to USA in the semi-finals last week.

Bernard then started again as they faced Panama in the third place play-off – earning himself a clean sheet as Jamaica claimed their first bit of silverware in their history.

The 23-year-old took to Instagram to share his delight at making history with the national team, sharing a number of photos with the caption: “Proud to be Jamaican!! To make history with the national team and to win my first international medal is a special moment for me.

“Overall another step in the right direction for us.”

Where does Di’Shon Bernard’s excellent campaign end?

Bernard will now hope to jet off to his first Copa America tournament this summer, with Jamaica set to take on Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela in the group stage.

The United academy graduate may well enjoy one of the best seasons of his career if he can help keep Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship this term, before travelling to the United States to potentially come up against the likes of Lionel Messi and Vinicius Jr.

The Owls certainly don’t want him to earn himself too much attention though, with Bernard’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Danny Rohl‘s side will be desperate to extend his contract if they stay in the Championship, but it would be surprising if there wasn’t a number of clubs looking to snap him up for free.

He will be one of many who are now considering their futures in Yorkshire, though fans will be hoping it will be Rohl that can persuade them to stick around.
