Report: Newcastle decide they are going to let 'really good’ 30-year-old leave on a free transfer

Newcastle United are expected to be heavily involved in the transfer market this summer once again, after a disappointing season under Eddie Howe – and four players are nearing the end of their deals.

Having qualified for the Champions League last season, Newcastle’s lack of depth – despite their huge finances – have been laid bare this time around. The Toon will be loking to fix that in the coming months.

In order to do so, it is likely the club will have to cut some of the dead wood from their squad, in order to make room both in terms of bodies – and on the wage bill. Numerous players will be told they can go.

Four players are out of contract in June, and already Newcastle have made a decision on one of those – in the form of stopper Loris Karius. Mark Gillespie, Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie are also out of contract.

Newcastle United make decision on Loris Karius future

Karius, 30, joined Newcastle back in September 2022 and has only played twice since – acting as the clubn’s third-choice goalkeeper. One was the Carabao Cup final, with Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka out.

Karius of course, was at one point Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper before the signing of Aisson – playing inthe 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid. But his career has gone south since then.

Two howlers, one that saw Karim Benzema tap home and another, which saw him drop a long-range Gareth Bale strike into the net, saw Liverpool lose 3-1. Now, he is set to leave Newcastle on a free.

TMW claim Newcastle have made a decision on the future of Karius, and that is not to offer the German goalkeeper a new deal on Tyneside. Already, his agents are hard at work, trying to take him to Italy.

Where will Karius end up next? He is pushing for one League…

Indeed, his partner is from Italy and he is destined to move to Serie A. He has been offered to Roma but with Tiago Pinto’s future unclear, that request was unsuccessful. Monza and Torino have been targeted.

It is a suroprise that Karius has remained at Newcastle this long – with some staff on Tyneside keen to see him go last summer. ButEddie Howe fought to keep Karius on board for another 12 months, and he has.

Certainly, there is a good goalkeeper in Karius – a player that Jurgen Klopp has praised as “really good”. But he needs to find himself a club where he is going to get game time. Is that in Serie A? Very unlikely.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Karius come the summer but one thing is clear, Newcastle have made up their minds on his future at St. James’ Park. He will leave the club on a free transfer.
