Dejphon Chansiri simply has to deliver on broken Sheffield Wednesday promise this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday’s controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri has a lot of amends to make this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday could be in store for a very testing summer transfer window.

As things stand, the Owls sit in 23rd place in the Championship table, and last week it was revealed that Sunderland are interested in Danny Rohl.

Rohl would surely swap League One football at Wednesday for what is surely going to be Championship football at Sunderland, should they make an approach in the summer.

But there’s a slim chance that the Owls stay up and that Rohl also stays.

If that’s the case, it’d arguably be Chansiri’s last chance to put his money where his mouth is.

Dejphon Chansiri broken January transfer promise at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday went into January on the back of some poor form.

Although they ended 2023 with a win at Preston, Wednesday had lost three of their previous four before that, being nine points adrift in 23rd after a Boxing Day defeat vs Coventry City.

The Owls’ main and most obvious need in January was a new striker.

Although Bailey Cadamarteri has broken through, it was clear that Rohl couldn’t rely solely on him, especially with Michael Smith and Lee Gregory both having outside interest in the New Year.

And it was revealed that Chansiri would break the bank to bring in a striker, with Alan Nixon saying at the time that the Owls owner was ready to spend £30k-a-week on a loan striker for Rohl.

In the end they signed Ike Ugbo who’s flourished under Rohl. But Sheffield Wednesday also tried and failed to sign Duncan McGuire in the window, suggesting that there’s more money behind the scenes at Hillsborough than Chansiri makes out.

Time for Chansiri to cough up or sell up

Chansiri has lost all hope from Sheffield Wednesday fans following this season.

But it doesn’t look as though he’s ready to part ways with the club yet and so fans must brace themselves for some more turbulence yet.

Chansiri must now realise though that he’s at a breaking point.

It’ll be a miracle if Sheffield Wednesday stay up and keep hold of Rohl and if that happens, Chansiri needs to take one last roll of the dice.

He needs to theow whatever he has left at the playing staff in a bid to keep Rohl content, as Rohl is currently by far the most valuable asset to the club.

Chansiri could also do with improving the facilities and giving Rohl the platform and infrastructure needed to get the team on some kind of long-term trajectory.

Nixon’s report on a loan striker and then the McGuire saga arguably proves that Chansiri has money for transfers; it’s time we saw it.
