Greek media laud George Baldock again as he completely shuts down £100m Liverpool target

It was heartbreak in the end for George Baldock and Greece as they failed to qualify for the Euros last night.

A defeat on penalties against Georgia after a hard-fought 120 minutes ensured Baldock will remain in Sheffield – or on his holidays at least – over the summer.

For Greece, who were slight favourites going into the game, it was a defeat that hurt. For Georgia, it was a memorable moment as they qualified for their first ever major tournament.

As for Baldock, there was mixed feelings on a personal level for him. He came off after an hour with an injury but did manage to play well again.

He followed up his rave review against Kazakhstan with another fine performance here. Indeed, he even shut down one of Europe’s highest rated wingers in the process.

Greek media delighted with George Baldock again

Giving their player ratings once again for the national team, SDNA was impressed with Baldock.

Up against the £100m-rated and Liverpool and Arsenal linked Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Baldock excelled again.

“He didn’t let Kvaratskhelia catch his breath. He closed the spaces properly, he had some highs. In the 60th minute, he was replaced due to injury by Rota,” SDNA wrote.

Baldock is among a number of United players out of contract this summer and is yet to pen fresh terms.

However, Stephen Bettis did hint in a recent interview that some players have one year options in those contracts, meaning Baldock might well be one of them.

The one negative here from Baldock is he came off injured again. Chris Wilder will be hoping it’s nothing as he prepares his team to face Fulham this weekend.

Baldock shows his class again for Greece

Most Blades fans know how good George Baldock is. Defensively, he’s arguably one of the better right-backs in the entire league, even at the current level.

If he doesn’t have a one-year option in his contract, then this is something United need to get on top of quickly and sort out.

Of course, Baldock may well have offers from elsewhere and choose to leave. But if he’s not pushing to go, then he has to be given fresh terms, providing this injury is not going to be one that keeps recurring.

Regardless, Baldock has been a great servant and player for Sheffield United. If he does leave, he’ll go with the best wishes of everyone at the club you’d feel.
