Sheffield Wednesday will surely hand new contract to £8.4k-a-week ace despite poor season - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday have several pressing contract decisions to make in the coming weeks.

Sheffield Wednesday head towards the summer with a horde of first-team players out of contract.

Talks regarding new deals seem to have been put on the backburner given the Owls’ league predicament.

Danny Rohl‘s side remain in the drop zone despite a run of five wins in eight, though just one point separates Sheffield Wednesday in 23rd and Birmingham City in 21st.

Whilst there’s some who may fancy moving on regardless of what division the Owls are in, there are some who will surely be waiting to find out their team’s fate.

But there could be one player in particular who’s handed a new deal, regardless of how this season ends.

Danny Rohl facing goalkeeper crisis at Sheffield Wednesday this summer

Assuming that Rohl stays in the summer, he’ll have a lot of work to do in his goalkeeping department.

Currently, the Owls’ first-team goalkeepers are Cameron Dawson, James Beadle, and Pierce Charles.

Beadle has impressed since arriving on loan from Brighton in January, even going on to impress on the international stage with England U20s this month.

He’s kept five clean sheets in just 11 Championship outings for the Owls, whereas Sheffield Wednesday academy graduate Dawson kept four in 18 during the first half of the season.

But with Beadle seeing his loan expire in the summer and Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of another deal for the Brighton man looking slim, it could mean that Dawson is handed a new deal.

As per Salary Sport, Dawson is one of the mid-earning Sheffield Wednesday players right now, at £8.4k-a-week.

Cameron Dawson could be in line for new contract

Dawson was a talking point during the first half of the season.

He’s had spells in the past where he’s looked like a top goalkeeper, but this season he’s certainly looked shaky.

Fans want him to do well given that he’s a Sheffield-born player who’s come through the academy, but it became clear that the Owls needed a new no.1; not only one who’s more reliable but one who better suits the passing style of play at Hillsborough.

Despite Dawson’s poor performances, he may well be in line for a new deal ahead of the summer with Beadle leaving, and no guarantee of who might come in or whether or not Sheffield Wednesday would be able to sign a better goalkeeper than Dawson.

The 28-year-old has 200 career appearances to his name with 83 of those coming in the Championship, so he’s certainly experienced and he could be a useful no.2 if Wednesday stay up, or a useful contender for the no.1 spot if the Owls go down.

Charles looks like a real prospect and if Sheffield Wednesday are relegated than he and Dawson could realistically battle for the no.1 spot next season, with youngster Jack Hall potentially coming up as the third-choice.

But if Wednesday stay up then they’ll need at least Dawson, and hopefully one more, so expect Dawson to be one of the first names on Sheffield Wednesday’s shortlist for a new deal this summer.
