WhatsApp users warned about 'virus attack' hoax received via text and email

WhatsApp users are worried about a potential ‘virus attack’ thanks to a hoax returned in 2024.

For years, users of the messaging app have been warned through emails and text messages about the “Martinelli” video, which never existed, as well as a fake WhatsApp Gold update. It’s repeating once again.

WhatsApp user receive warning about a ‘virus attack’ hoax

This has been happening since 2019. WhatsApp users receive messages from family and friends warning about a video called Martinelli, expected to launch the following day.

The widely circulated message further claims that the video shouldn’t be opened under any circumstance as it can cause your device to get hacked.

The hoax further claims that WhatsApp would release an update called WhatsApp Gold to offer an upgrade on features.

However, none of the users in the past years have received the video called Martinelli, but clicking on a link that claims to take you to WhatsApp Gold can still redirect you to a malicious website, thus compromising the safety of your device.

It’s safe to say WhatsApp users won’t receive the supposed video and the claims about the virus are only a hoax. However, you’re advised against clicking on links from unidentified sources.

Social media users are alarmed

Several WhatsApp users have taken to social media platforms such as TikTok and Twitter(X) to warn one another about the hoax, which some of them are convinced is true.

Stating the viral message one user claimed: “I got this from a friend that received comms from SOTA Signals Intelligence about a virus to be deployed via WhatsApp.”

Another said: “Today the radio was talking about Whatsapp Gold. There is a video that will be launched today/tomorrow on Whatsapp and is called Martinelli. Do not open it. Goes into your phone and nothing you do will fix it. Spread the word.”

While there is no truth to the above claim, you’re advised not to open the message or click on the links added to it. The best action is to delete the text and refrain from sharing it with others.
