Tottenham Hotspur don’t necessarily always operate in the same way as the rest of the big six.
Indeed, under Daniel Levy’s ownership, Spurs’ recruitment strategy has been rather conservative to say the least. They only spend big money when they absolutely have to, and they rarely sign superstar players.
Tottenham’s all-time record signing is Tanguy Ndombele, that should tell you all you need to know about how Spurs spend their money, and by the sounds of it, this summer won’t be any different.
Tottenham’s summer transfer strategy
Speaking on The Spurs Chat Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been speaking about Tottenham’s summer transfer strategy, and he says the club and the manager have settled on a strategy of signing numerous solid players rather than a superstar.
“I think it will be solid players. I don’t expect a superstar. We know that Tottenham’s strategy is different and Postecoglou is convinced that this is the best strategy to add three or four players in multiple positions rather than adding one player or superstar,” Romano said.
“Players for the future and soild players who can help immediately as soon as they join the club, I expect an interesting summer for the club.”
Tottenham building smartly
This is exactly what Tottenham did last summer, and it worked to great effect.
Let’s be real, Micky Van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario and Brennan Johnson weren’t superstars before joining Spurs, and while you could argue that James Maddison was that upper-echelon of player, he had just been relegated.
Tottenham are building a foundation of solid players to get to the next level, and then who knows? Perhaps superstar signings could be made further down the line.
It may be frustrating to see a lack of big name incomings at Spurs, but sometimes this slow and steady approach is the best way to improve year on year.
