For some time now, central defence has been a problem position for Manchester United. No matter who they brought in – it also seemed to be a problem for a side that were once defensively supreme.
Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and plenty more have arrived at Old Trafford in recent seasons – but have all struggled at times. It is an area Erik ten Hag needs to get right.
He certainly made a step in the right direction when signing Lisandro Martinez. However, this season, the Argentina star has been injured. Come the summer, with United down in sixth, new signings will be made.
Central defence will be targeted as an area that requires improvement once again – as the current options fail to provide the defensive quality needed. One player Manchester United want is Juve’s Gleison Bremer.
Manchester United want to sign Juventus star Gleison Bremer
The 27-year-old centre-back, hailed “incredible” for his form in Serie A, joined Juventus in the summer of 2022 after impressing at Torino. He has since played 72 times, starting all but one in the Serie A this term.
Suspenseion, preventing Bremer from completing a full bhouse so far. He has proved crucial in helping Juventus keep 13 clean sheets in 38 Serie A games, conceding only 21 goals. The middle of a back three.
Bremer is dreaming of a move to the Premier League, desperate to give his best years to an English side. That could mean a move to these shores in the summer. United are looking to take advantage of that.
But a new report from Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla on his website claims Bremer is not sold on a move to Old Trafford. Especially, given they look unlikely to qualify for the Champions League this term.
Bremer prefers move to Liverpool – do they need him?
The reporter claims that there is interest in Bremer from three other European heavyweights, who all rank higher than Manchester United in Bremer’s thinking. Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid.
Pedulla also claims that Juventus are unwilling to sell Bremer, but if a big offer of around £60m is made to land the centre-back – then they will have to consider it. Will Liverpool make a move for the big Brazilian?
Joe Gomez is back to his best, as is Virgil van Dijk. Ibrahima Konate is also a very solid option in defence. But, Joel Matip is set to leave. Konate is often injured, and Gomez is regularly covering in other positions.
There is certainly a need at Liverpool for another central defender and Bremer fits the mould. But, given he might not be a starting option when all are fit – is a move to Anfield advisable for him? One to watch.
