'The first obstacle': Chris Wilder says injured Blades star is nowhere near even being considered for training

Chris Wilder has been speaking about a number of Sheffield United’s injured players in his presser ahead of Fulham today.

Like a lot of Premier League teams this season, United have been hammered with injuries to key players.

The likes of Rhian Brewster and George Baldock have recently picked up injuries. While following those two, Max Lowe and Rhys Norrington-Davies are out for the season, while Oli McBurnie continues to struggle for full fitness.

All in all, injuries have massively held United back this season in a division that is already hard enough to compete in.

Sheffield United injuries a real problem

Wilder himself has spoken of a major issue at the club that he wants to resolve.

It stems back to when Paul Heckingbottom was in charge and this season has severely hampered the Blades.

Over the course of the summer, Wilder will hope to get on top of things. With a bit of luck, the injury problems become a thing of the past and United can kick on.

Of course, there are players who will come back and enjoy a career either with United or elsewhere.

But one man who we might not even see back at Bramall Lane is Chris Basham. This weekend’s game against Fulham comes as a reminder of the horrendous injury ‘Bash’ suffered that day.

And speaking to the press today, Wilder has been addressing Basham’s recovery.

Chatting to the local media as part of his presser, Wilder admitted that when it comes to Basham, there’s a long way to go.

And that includes just getting back to day to day activities with his family.

“He’s ok, he’s in good spirits as he always is. You know, it takes a lot to get him down so while he’s around the place he’s been bright and bubble. You know, it’s a long road in terms of his recovery and his rehab towards getting back to doing normal day to day things with his family. And I think that’s the first obstacle he needs to overcome. There’s not been a lot talked about in terms of getting him back involved or back on the training ground and sessions and resuming his career as an excellent footballer,” Wilder said.

This weekend will likely see Basham on the pitch or there in some capacity. The Blades are expected to pay some sort of tribute to Tim Ream, the Fulham defender who helped Basham initially.

Basham is unlikely to play for United again, if at all. A send off at the end of the season, then, would be fitting for one of the greats of the last few decades.
