Mason Mount was denied Sir Alex Ferguson-inspired club record against Brentford

Mason Mount grabbed his first goal in a Manchester United shirt against Brentford.

But the strike could have been so much sweeter. Mount’s goal looked destined to be the winner, only to have his first in red cancelled out by Kristoffer Ajer just three minutes later.

It also robbed Erik ten Hag of a much-needed three points heading into a seriously tough run of Premier League fixtures.

Had Ajer not cancelled out the English midfielder’s finish – Mount would have cemented himself in the history books with a club record.

Mason Mount denied Sir Alex Ferguson-inspired club record

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Mount would have recorded a club-record fifth ‘Fergie Time’ victory in a single campaign.

Since Steve Bruce delivered the birth of Fergie Time against Sheffield Wednesday 31 years ago, United have scored 47 stoppage time goals and the four this season make up the joint-highest – on par with the 2018-19 campaign.

What is Fergie time?

For those that don’t know – “Fergie time” is a term often used in football that refers to the phenomenon where extra time is added to the end of a match beyond what is officially indicated by the referee’s stopwatch.

It’s named after Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary manager of Manchester United, who was notorious for his teams scoring late goals during his tenure at the club.

Any goal scored now past the 90-minute mark appears to be deemed as ‘scored in Fergie-time’ for Manchester United fans.

The first of many for Mason Mount?

Although Mount was denied this accomplishment, it’s positive signs for United’s newest number seven.

Fans will be hoping that this first strike as a Red Devil is now the first of many, and his Old Trafford career can really finally begin.

His next trip is arguably his most important yet. He faces his former side, Chelsea, where all eyes will surely be on him.
