'Everyone knows': Chris Sutton says whether he thinks Newcastle deserved a penalty for Kalvin Phillips' tackle

Chris Sutton has now shared his view on whether Newcastle United deserved a second penalty against West Ham United on Saturday.

Kalvin Phillips’ woes were laid bare for all to see when he brought down Anthony Gordon in the box, only for Alexander Isak to then dispatch his second spot-kick of the game.

David Moyes will still feel very aggrieved to this point today, not only because of that decision, but also because his West Ham side surrendered such a lead.

On the other side of the coin, Eddie Howe will have been incredibly grateful to the likes of Isak and Harvey Barnes for inspiring such a comeback, and winning a vital three points.

Amid all of their terribly unfortunate long-term injuries, Newcastle have now climbed up to eighth position and have reignited their chances of claiming a European spot for next season.

Of course, West Ham are now the side above them, with one game played more, delineating the six-point swing this victory was worth.

All that being said, the penalty in question was a huge turning point in the game, something Chris Sutton discussed on ‘The Monday Night Club’ podcast.

Chris Sutton adament that Newcastle deserved a second penalty for Kalvin Phillips’ foul

Whilst some of a West Ham perspective felt as if Gordon had bought the foul, Sutton was adamant it was a pen.

And speaking on the podcast, Sutton said Phillips almost took Gordon’s leg off.

He explained: “[Jarrod] Bowen was carrying a threat, [Mohammed] Kudus, [Lucas] Paqueta is a lovely technician.

“They were so comfortable but then they got the second penalty, I thought it was a penalty, Anthony Gordon was brought down.

“And then they just got this momentum Newcastle and the crowd were really up for it.

“Because he nearly took his leg off. I really feel for Kavin Phillips, my stomach sinks for him.

“He had a big swing, Gordon got his body in, everyone knows what he was doing but if you kick someone as hard as he kicked him, it’s a penalty kick.”

Of course, it is pretty difficult to argue with Sutton’s view on this one, even if some West Ham fans may still feel frustrated.

The Newcastle winger was clever, and saw an opportunity to get ahead of the ball – even if it is hard not to feel sorry for Phillips.

But with all that being said, Jamie Carragher has now shared his thoughts on whether West Ham should sack David Moyes after the season.
