Report: Crystal Palace now monitoring 26-year-old defender who wins more tackles than Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace are now chasing a new defender for this summer, in expectation of Marc Guehi’s exit.

Oliver Glasner‘s first transfer window as Crystal Palace boss is fast approaching and his priorities seem to be identified.

A defender, winger and striker are all positions that Palace are keen on strengthening.

Much of this could be due to expected departures, such as Marc Guehi, who’s attracting interest from all over in what would be a £50m plus deal.

Now, another potential option to replace him has been linked with the Eagles, here’s what we know…

Crystal Palace keeping tabs on defender who out-tackles Guehi

With the departure of Guehi looking likely, Palace’s search for his successor has been sped up over recent weeks.

Now a report from The Sun has suggested that Dougie Freedman could be once again looking in his favourite market of the Championship.

The player is a former Chelsea defender in the form of Jake Clarke-Salter, who’s been having an impressive campaign with QPR.

Palace isn’t the only club interested though, with Burnley and Wolves also keeping tabs on the former England U21 captain.

Clarke-Salter is a proper old-school defender, who loves a tackle, averaging 1.5 per 90 this season as per FotMob. This is almost double Guehi’s average of 0.80 per 90, as per Fot Mob.

Who is Jake Clarke-Salter?

The latest name in a long line of defenders to be linked this season, following the likes of Cristhian Mosquera, is Clarke-Salter.

At 26, he’s probably not the signing that fans would be hoping for, but might be a real shrewd piece of business this summer with some reinforcements in defence needed.

He stands at 6ft 1in and is a former 12-time England U21 international.

Despite making his name through the ranks at Chelsea, he made just two appearances for the first team at Stamford Bridge.

Other than a loan to the Dutch side Vitesse, he’s made a career in the Championship at Coventry, Birmingham and Sunderland on loans.

He permanently left Chelsea in 2022 with QPR as his destination and now this season he’s impressed enough to attract Premier League sides.
