'Not sure if...': Barry Bannan claim questioned after eye-opening Sheffield Wednesday presser

Barry Bannan has recently discussed his future at Sheffield Wednesday.

After nine years at Sheffield Wednesday, and plenty of highs and lows, there seems to be a slight uncertainty about Bannan’s Hillsborough future.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, and throughout this season, there’s almost been an assumption that Bannan would extend his stay, regardless of what the outcome of the campaign is.

But some recent comments from Bannan seem to suggest some uncertainty from himself about where his future lies.

Speaking to the press ahead of the Championship clash vs QPR this weekend, Bannan said on his Sheffield Wednesday future:

“I’ve not heard anything. I think it’s just a case of knuckling down for these last six games and what will be, will be.”

Bannan also aimed a dig at the club and at owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Bannan questioned the club’s management of contracts with a number of first-team players out of contract this summer.

“Listen, we’re humans,” Bannan started. “People are different. It [relegation] will probably be playing a part. So as we go forward as a club we need to make sure this situation doesn’t come around again.

“It’s about having a bit of clarity for players going forward. I don’t think at a club this should happen. It’s not a great situation. If people’s futures were clearer then it’s a lot easier for them, but like I said, you’ve got to put the club first at this period of time. The club is paying your wages so you need to go out and fight until your contract is over and what will be will be.”

In what was a fairly eye-opening interview, Bannan also revealed how being the captain of the side, not only during a tough run but in the situation that a lot of players find themselves in with regards to contracts, can be difficult.

But Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Stuart Rayner questioned this claim, posting on X:

Barry Bannan’s Sheffield Wednesday future up in the air

It’s been an intriguing week for Bannan in particular.

In the 2-0 defeat vs Middlesbrough on Monday, Bannan arguably had his worst game of the season so far.

At the end of a long season in which Bannan has played 36 times in the Championship, there may be signs of slowing down, which could forecast a less-involved 2024/25 season.

Where Bannan might be playing next season remains to be seen, and whether or not his comments about difficulties captaining the side will go down well, also remains to be seen.

Bannan has been a great leader for the club.

But struggles captaining the side given the contract situation seem odd, though of course, fans and pundits don’t know the inner-workings of a club and how difficult it might be in Bannan’s particular situation.

Fans just want a captain who never shies away and never shows any kind of struggles.

And on Saturday, Bannan will need to give a real leader’s performance and hopefully fire Sheffield Wednesday to what would be a huge away win.

A win could lift them out of the bottom three.
