Newark and Sherwood District Council approve plans to split retirement flat at Kings Court, Southwell

Plans to split a large retirement flat into two one-bedroom units have been approved by councillors.

The application, submitted by Newark and Sherwood District Council, for 39 Kings Court in Southwell, was approved by the district council’s planning committee at its meeting yesterday (April 4).

The proposal includes the creation of two one-bedroom flats with a shared stairwell above the existing community centre — where there is currently one large four bedroom flat.

It would also include the creation of three new car parking spaces — in addition to the four existing spaces. One of these would be to the southeast and would involve extending an existing parking bay and two of these would be to the north of the building.

The flats are each set to contain a double bedroom, open plan kitchen diner and living space, shower room and storage cupboard. One flat has an additional dressing room area attached to the bedroom and a second storage space.

Johno Lee said he had reservations about supporting the application as a similar one was refused years ago.

He said: “I am on the fence at the moment, but would be going towards refusal because we turned down other applications like these.”

Southwell Town Council had previously discussed the application and agreed to support the sceme, although councillors had reservations about the increase in parking spaces.

The application was approved by the district council’s planning committee.
