'Quite strange': Eddie Howe says £32m Newcastle star suffered a freak injury

Injuries and Newcastle United have been intertwined all season.

While the sheer number of absences Eddie Howe has had to contend with this season has seen pundits such as Joe Cole question exactly what the club are doing behind the scenes, bad luck can’t be ignored.

Howe himself has admitted the club could have done things better behind the scenes when it comes to dealing with injured players but a rotten run of fortune has also played its part.

Blaming something as abstract as luck does feel somewhat lazy and questions will need to be asked.

Still, there are some things you simply cannot get away from.

Two defenders – Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles – suffered ACL injuries in consecutive games, after all. What can Newcastle do about that?

Harvey Barnes, meanwhile, saw his opening few months as a Newcastle player impacted by a freakish foot problem, the likes of which the club’s medical staff had never seen in football before.

Now, Howe has confirmed another player has suffered a “strange” injury.

Eddie Howe confirms £32m star suffered a strange injury

Indeed, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of the Premier League trip to Fulham on Saturday, Howe addressed Tino Livramento’s recent injury.

The full-back, who has shone since a £32m move from Southampton last summer, was forced off against West Ham after an injury and is now expected to miss around a month of action.

Howe has now opened up on what a strange incident it was that led to Livramento’s injury.

“Tino’s was quite strange really as the ball’s just hit his ankle as he’s gone to plant it on the floor and he’s twisted it to an uncomfortable angle but thankfully it’s not as serious as it could have been,” he said (via X, formerly Twitter).

Tino Livramento has been Newcastle’s best summer signing

It’s a great shame to see Livramento sustain an injury.

Of all of Newcastle’s signings from last summer, the defender is the only one who has come in and hit the ground running.

Barnes is impressing of late but Livramento has certainly been the standout.

Hopefully, he can return soon…
