Danny Rohl must now unleash rapid Sheffield Wednesday teenager for QPR crunch match - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday head to QPR in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Sheffield Wednesday would’ve watched on as their South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United succumbed to relegation last night.

The Owls needed Rotherham to do them a favour and take points off of Plymouth Argyle.

But the Green Army won 1-0 at the New York Stadium to move up into 19th, pulling themselves four points clear of the drop zone.

Sheffield Wednesday remain in 23rd and now three points from safety.

QPR meanwhile are up in 16th after a run of one defeat in eight, with six points between them and the drop zone.

After the 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Easter Monday, which left Danny Rohl visibly frustrated, he looks set to make a few changes to the side.

He has Josh Windass and Callum Paterson returning from injury and so we could see those two feature later on in the game, or maybe even from the off.

The pair have been quite sorely missed in recent weeks and Rohl will be hoping that both can hit the ground running ahead of the final six games of the season.

Elsewhere, Di’Shon Bernard looks touch-and-go to feature at Loftus Road.

What changes Rohl might make against QPR remains to be seen; as does whether or not he’ll change the shape.

The Owls need to find a way of being more formidable on the road, especially against good opponents, which right now is what QPR are.

But they could certainly do with an injection of pace and enthusiasm in the side, which a certain Joey Phuthi might be able to provide.

Phuthi, 19, has enjoyed a breakthrough in the 2023/24 season.

He’s not only made his Sheffield Wednesday debut but he’s also made his international debut with Zimbabwe too.

He’s risen through the ranks at Hillsborough and has featured once in the Championship this season, though his last first-team appearance came in February in the FA Cup.

But Phuthi recently turned heads after a clip of him playing for the development side emerged:

And it’s since been revealed this week that Phuthi is in line for a new Sheffield Wednesday contract.

The above video showcases Phuthi’s pace and dribbling skills.

Rohl has players who can do that in Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama, though Musaba in particular has been poor recently.

Phuthi though could be a real impact player for the Owls.

And often times, these younger players can play with freedom even in very difficult situations, so that youthfulness could also give Sheffield Wednesday a lease of life during the run-in.

Phuthi is certainly knocking on the door once again but it seems like he’s being saved more for next season.

Still, a few minutes in the run-in here could be great character-building for the teen, and it could also be very useful for Rohl during a time of difficulty in the first-team.

Kick off against QPR is at 3pm.
