Alan Shearer delivers his reaction as Newcastle beat Fulham in the Premier League

Newcastle United continued in their decent form after last month’s international break.

Indeed, Eddie Howe has spoken positively about seeing improvements from the team of late and Newcastle made it two wins from three with a 1-0 victory at Fulham on Saturday.

They were second best for much of the Premier League contest at Craven Cottage but it did not matter.

Bruno Guimaraes stepped up towards the end of the game and struck to keep the pressure on West Ham and even potentially Manchester United in the hunt for Europa League qualification.

While Howe has been pleased with what he’s seen from his team of late, it was hardly vintage stuff from Newcastle.

Even the most optimistic of supporters would surely struggle to admit they were good value for their victory but claiming a clean sheet felt important.

It’s fair to say one man was impressed.

Club legend Alan Shearer was not overly thrilled with what he saw from his team in the opening 45 minutes.

He took to X, formerly Twitter, to write: “The Toon miles off it in that first half.”

However, after Guimaraes sealed a crucial win for Newcastle, Shearer followed up with: “Much much better second half.”

Newcastle do not always convince but Europe is on the cards

Like against West Ham last weekend, Newcastle did not prove particularly convincing but still somehow found a way to win.

They were even dealt fresh injury concerns too as that particular crisis refuses to relent but, yet, Howe’s side battled through.

The character of this team cannot be questioned. They may not be the consistent force they were last season but they are prepared to fight, underlining the support Howe has amongst the players.

Newcastle will not be written off and another season of European football is indeed on the cards.
