Oliver Glasner repeated one of Roy Hodgson's biggest mistakes today, lucky it didn't end the same - opinion

During a 4-2 loss against Manchester City, Oliver Glasner repeated a mistake that Roy Hodgson made at Crystal Palace.

For Crystal Palace, it was defeat on Saturday as Manchester City simply blew the Eagles away for a period of the game.

Before this, however, it looked as though Palace may actually have caused City some problems.

Oliver Glasner had the perfect gameplan, pressing City high and it so nearly worked.

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard grabbed Palace’s two goals in a 4-2 loss which ultimately has more positives than negatives.

But there was one point, when Glasner made a mistake, repeating one which ended up proving fateful to Roy Hodgson, despite the outcome being different it was a huge risk.

What mistake did Oliver Glasner make against Man City?

It feels like a lifetime ago that Hodgson was the Palace boss, but it was only February when he departed.

Before he left, during his penultimate game, he and his Eagles lost 4-1 to Brighton.

In this game, Hodgson made one of his biggest mistakes as despite the game being beyond his side already, he brought on a recovering Michael Olise.

The Frenchman had been injured for a few weeks and him being back for this game was surprising but even more surprising was that Hodgson risked him in a game which was already done.

We all know how this story went, Olise reaggravated his injury and it left the Palace board furious with the manager. Fans also voiced their disgust over the situation.

Fast forward two months and Olise has finally returned to the squad, and in a game in which Palace were 4-1 down in, Glasner opted to repeat this mistake of Hodgson and bring Olise into the fray.

This could’ve gone very wrong, but Glasner is lucky that it didn’t end the same way as it did before and Olise has escaped unscathed.

How did Michael Olise play for Crystal Palace on his comeback cameo?

Olise came off the bench in the 74th minute and played 24 minutes including stoppage time, and despite likely being rusty, he shows signs that his best isn’t far off.

Here are his stats as per FotMob.

  • 24 minutes
  • 100 passing accuracy
  • 6 passes completed
  • 2 chances created
  • 14 touches
  • 1 successful dribble
  • 1 duel won

To have created two chances with just 14 touches is an insane record and he probably should’ve had an assist, only Edouard squandered a chance Olise set up for him.

Hopefully, Olise will be back fully fit and firing over the next few weeks and help Palace enjoy a strong end to the season.
