'Could be': Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl drops 7-word verdict on Ian Poveda injury after QPR

Danny Rohl has issued a seven-word verdict on Ian Poveda’s injury following Sheffield Wednesday’s win over QPR.

Sheffield Wednesday fans finally had something to celebrate as they claimed their first win in five matches yesterday.

It was a Djeidi Gassama masterclass that earned them all three points, bagging a goal and an assist after replacing Ian Poveda on the half hour mark.

Supporters will be delighted with the 20-year-old’s display, but it did come at the cost of Poveda.

The Leeds United loanee made his first start since picking up an injury in the 6-0 hammering by Ipswich Town last month, but was forced off once again in the first half at Loftus Road.

Poveda looked visibly upset as he made his way off the pitch, and Danny Rohl has now given a concerning update on his injury.

Danny Rohl’s verdict on Ian Poveda injury

Speaking to The Star, the German coach said: “I expect that it’s again a muscle injury.

“And when you look now we have just four weeks to go, so it could be not good for us… But the good thing for us was that Josh (Windass) got 60 minutes, Kristian Pedersen was back, Callum Paterson was back, and that’s always helpful.”

Can Djeidi Gassama be the key to the Owls’ survival?

Ian Poveda’s absence had been a real blow for Sheffield Wednesday in recent games, and they will certainly suffer if he is out for the rest of the season too.

The Owls had really lacked an attacking threat without him, but they certainly didn’t against QPR.

Djeidi Gassama was given a huge opportunity to make his mark following Poveda’s injury and he really took it with both hands.

The winger was sofascore’s Man of the Match, having had two shots, three successful dribbles, was fouled five times, made one interception and one tackle.

Gassama has struggled to get going this term, but may just have picked the perfect time to find his feet in the Championship.

The forward will have no doubt earned himself a start against Norwich and, if he can fill the boots of Poveda, then he could well have a huge impact on the Owls’ survival hopes.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday may have seen the last of Poveda at the club, though they will hope they can sign him permanently if they manage to stay up without him.
