'I was supposed to...': Kobbie Mainoo shares exactly what went wrong for Liverpool's opening goal today

Kobbie Mainoo might have scored a wonder goal for Manchester United today but he was also partly at fault in his defensive duties.

Mainoo turned on the edge of the box and curled a stunning effort into the top corner to give United the lead against Liverpool.

It was Mainoo’s first goal at Old Trafford and he picked one of the biggest games of the season to deliver.

Of course, the England international has been revelling in the plaudits of late.

But in terms of his defensive duties, Mainoo was also partly at fault for Liverpool’s opener from Luis Diaz.

Darwin Nunez won a header and Diaz was simply left alone to smash home.

And speaking about the incident, Mainoo told Sky Sports after the game that it was an error on his and Rasmus Hojlund’s part.

“With that one I was supposed to be double-teaming Virgil van Dijk with Rasmus Hojlund and leaving Luis Diaz. We should clear it and it was miscommunication and details have cost us,” Mainoo said.

Kobbie Mainoo must do all aspects of the game

Of course, Mainoo is a young man learning his craft and there’s going to be moments where he doesn’t get things quite right.

This is obviously one of them. The midfielder, along with Hojlund, has got this one a bit wrong and in the end, it has cost his team.

At the highest level, these small details matter and can be costly, just like today.

Mainoo will, naturally, improve on this element of his game over time and his performance overall against the Reds was excellent.

Small details matter, though, and the youngster will take a harsh lesson from this one you feel.
