Manchester United have a first team stretched with injuries especially in defence. The academy could provide a solution to these problems.
A succession of injuries in defence have made this season a constant struggle for Manchester United.
Right now there are four centre-backs out injured and two left-backs. Erik ten Hag is working with what he has available.
Willy Kambwala stepped up against Liverpool, making his second ever start. The young Frenchman was impressive in the 2-2 draw.
Manchester United youngsters on the bench
Manchester United’s options really are quite thin in certain positions, which has left a number of inexperienced youngsters on the bench, waiting for their chance.
Kambwala has been required during the past two games, and potentially in more matches moving forward.
Against Liverpool, right-back Habeeb Ogunneye made the bench for the fourth time this season.
Amad and Omari Forson were also options, like Ogunneye, unused against Liverpool.
In the squad for the very first time was promising left-backHarry Amass, who was held out of academy duty over the weekend, in case he was needed for a debut.
Amass, 17, has trained with the first team and has been impressive at academy level since his summer move from Watford. Just last month he signed his first professional contract.
He plays in a position where United have bothLuke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out, and while the club are tipped to possibly sign another left-back this summer, Amass could provide an alternative, especially if he gets a chance before the end of this current season.
Harry Amass next in line
Amass’ step up to the first team squad was a positive step for his development, and was a discussion point on MUTV post-game.
Premier League winner Danny Simpson told the channel he is pleased for Amass, who he has seen play first hand, and believes he will benefit from his experience on the bench against Liverpool.
He said: “Amazing for the kid. He’s a good lad. We’re producing kids, young lads that come through to get experience. You know, even just travelling, on the bench, being around this, this is what it’s like, it doesn’t matter about your age.
“I’ve watched him in the Youth Cup this season. I’ve been around him at Carrington, in the Youth Cup I thought he was fantastic. You know, unfortunately, they went out, he was probably the best player.
“So it’s great for him and his career and development that he has experienced this today.”
