'I'm not a huge fan...': Pundit questions 'crazy' thing Maresca does that is costing Leicester City

Leicester City seem to have got over their recent blip after putting together two wins in two to move back to the summit of the Championship table.

The East Midlanders defeated Birmingham City 2-1 on Saturday after Stephy Mavididi netted an 87th-minute winner.

Having suffered four defeats in six league games, many questioned whether City would be able to bounce back.

But, Enzo Maresca‘s side have answered those critics emphatically and they’ve looked back to their very best.

Although, one pundit isn’t totally convinced about one thing Maresca does.

Maresca has been largely praised this season for the job he’s done since taking over interim manager Dean Smith.

It wasn’t an easy task to change the mentality around the place after suffering relegation, so he deserves immense credit for doing so.

But, Justin Peach, speaking on the Second Tier podcast, isn’t totally convinced about one thing he does that may be costing his side.

“I will say this, I’m not a huge fan of Maresca and his insistence on control over quality,” Peach admitted.

“I think if he really does play into the quality of this squad, I think they will be more convincing in those games and they will run away with games a little bit more and probably create a lot more chances than they do, which is a crazy thing.

“But that quality of the squad is there to be seen and he’s dragging them through games and I think that’s what’s going to pull them over the line.”

Perhaps a little harsh from Peach, as Maresca’s side aren’t afraid of firing long balls in behind, as evinced in the video below.

Callum Doyle is key to a more direct approach

Callum Doyle, who joined The Foxes on loan from Manchester City last summer, has enjoyed a productive campaign.

The left-footed defender started the season as Maresca’s everpresent in the side but a knee injury sidelined him for around three months of action.

Since making his return towards the back end of last year, he’s had to compete with James Justin for a place.

He is a slightly different profile to Justin, as he’s a natural left-sider which allows City to build out from the back in a slightly different pattern of play.

Further, he has an exceptional ability to find forwards with long and diagonal balls, allowing for a more direct approach, when needed.

So, with that said, Doyle’s recent inclusion seems to be one of the catalysts for Leicester‘s rise in form.
