'Actually ahead of Sir Alex': Pundit stunned by Erik ten Hag stat he saw before Manchester United draw

Mark Schwarzer has shared a statistic he saw concerning Erik ten Hag ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool which really surprised him.

It seems fair to say that the jury appears to largely remain out on Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman has certainly had some highs and lows during his time in the Premier League.

There was a promising first season at the club. But Manchester United have not kicked on during this campaign.

They currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, 11 points off the top-four. It looks highly unlikely that United will be in the Champions League next year.

Some have already insisted that they would be really surprised to see ten Hag still at Manchester United next season.

But United’s performance against Liverpool on Sunday showed that the players are not ready to throw in the towel.

And speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast, Mark Schwarzer noted that there is an argument that ten Hag is actually doing a better job than many give him credit for.

“You know what is an interesting stat though, I saw an interesting stat before the game, so it doesn’t include yesterday’s game, but Erik ten Hag has a win ratio at Old Trafford of 71.7 percent. That is the best win ratio of any permanent Red Devils manager in the club’s history. That’s actually ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson on 71.2 percent,” he said.

“The criticism that’s levelled at ten Hag and where United are, I was really surprised by that stat.”

One reason may save Manchester United boss this summer

Schwarzer did note that it is obviously unfair to compare ten Hag with Ferguson. But clearly, it is remarkable to hear that the 54-year-old is in that position.

Having said that, it is hard to argue that United are making progress. Jamie Carragher said that Manchester United face too many shots. And on another day, Liverpool would have put the game to bed long before half-time.

What you do have to say is that it may not be the best time to try and replace ten Hag. Both Liverpool and Barcelona will be looking for new managers this summer.

If United do not have a standout replacement in mind, keeping ten Hag may be the more sensible decision.

Perhaps he is not doing that bad a job after all.
