'Brutally honest': Sky Sports journalist shares whether Everton could still be deducted more points on appeal

Yesterday marked Groundhog Day for Everton, as they once again were informed of the PSR decision reached by the Premier League’s independent commission.

And, unsurprisingly, it was not good news.

Another two-point penalty, snagged due to a £16m overspend, it marked a considerable decrease from the ten points taken in December, but still a frustrating outcome.

The club have since made their feelings known on the matter, admitting they were pleased that their mitigation was taken into account, but remain disappointed with the sanction.

Fortunately, they also have revealed plans to appeal, with one journalist now detailing how that might work.

Everton appeal new points deduction

Speaking live on Sky Sports News yesterday afternoon, seeking to offer his journalistic analysis immediately after the announcement, reporter Anton Toloui was asked his thoughts on Everton’s chances of success with their appeal.

With finance expert Kieran Maguire later detailing his thoughts on the matter, the journalist in question instead decided to outline how an appeal could actually incur further penalty, should things go hugely awry.

He noted: ‘It goes in front of another independent panel. So effectively, yes, there could be another punishment put in place and the points deduction could increase or decrease. That’s the risk.

‘It would be very surprising if the mitigation case that Everton has gone against them to an extent that the punishment increases, that would surprise everyone within the football club and probably would surprise people within the Premier League to be brutally honest.’

How the Premier League table looks after Everton’s new deduction

Before their sanction, Everton were four points clear of the drop and just one point behind Crystal Palace, having leapfrogged Brentford on Saturday with their narrow win over Burnley.

It marked a much-needed win, and their first in the Premier League since the turn of the year.

Such a statistic speaks volumes for the lack of quality found at the bottom end of the table this campaign.

Well, the bottom seven now looks as follows, with Nottingham Forest and Luton Town likely feeling far more buoyed about their chances of survival.

  • 14th – Crystal Palace, 30 points, -18 goal difference, 31 games played
  • 15th – Brentford, 29 points, -13 goal difference, 32 games played
  • 16th – Everton*, 27 points, -10 goal difference, 31 games played
  • 17th – Nottingham Forest, 25 points, -16 goal difference, 32 games played
  • 18th – Luton Town, 25 points, -20 goal difference, 32 games played
  • 19th – Burnley, 19 points, -35 goal difference, 32 games played
  • 20th – Sheffield United, 16 points, -52 goal difference, 31 games played
