'Barely any': Eric Dier makes interesting claim about Ange Postecoglou's training sessions at Tottenham

Eric Dier has now made an interesting claim about Ange Postecoglou’s coaching style during their brief stint together at Tottenham Hotspur.

It became quite clear early on that Dier wasn’t going to be a big part of Postecoglou’s new era at Spurs, as the club changed their playing philosophy.

And whilst many believed there to simply be a clash of styles between the two, Dier’s latest words on The Overlap suggests it was more to do with the centre-back’s undecided future.

Dier was told he was free to leave in the summer, and having not agreed a move away before the window ended, it seemed that his position at the club wasn’t going to then suddenly change.

That being said, the now Bayern Munich starter did seem to enjoy his time working alongside Spurs’ new boss, even if he didn’t often get minutes on the pitch.

And when speaking on The Overlap with Gary Neville before Bayern’s Champions League tie with Arsenal tonight, Dier spoke very well about Postecoglou.

Neville was keen to hear more about Postecoglou and his tactics, but was then surprised by Dier’s response.

Eric Dier disagrees that Ange Postecoglou was the most tactically aware manager he played for

Given Spurs’ huge change on the pitch this season, Neville eventually asked Dier if Postecoglou was the best tactical coach he’s worked under.

And to his surprise, Dier was very quick to disagree.

He explained: “And Ange, I really, really enjoyed those six months, apart from not playing at all.

“I just really, really enjoyed the style of play, the style of training, I think he has fantastic coaches.”

Neville then asked: “The most tactically aware coach you’ve played under? Because what he’s achieved on the pitch, you think – how has he coached that?”

Dier: “No, interestingly he really doesn’t do barely any tactical work, what he does is every single training drill from Monday to Friday is drawn up to represent the way that he wants to play.”

It’s a really interesting insight into how Postecoglou and his team work, a coaching team who have instilled their philosophy so quickly and effectively.

Of course, there is still work to be done in order to progress Tottenham into a side who can win silverware, they’ll need to stop conceding so many goals for example.

And to that point, Gary Lineker did notice something very ‘weird’ about Tottenham’s win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
