Report: Club makes contact to sign Nottingham Forest 26-year-old unfancied by Nuno

Nottingham Forest have a number of players who will be deemed surplus to requirements during the summer transfer window. Now, a South American club has made an attempt to sign a player unfancied by Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Reds have been extremely active in the transfer market since winning promotion to the Premier League in 2022. No fewer than 43 players have joined the City Ground ranks and ultimately something is going to have to give.

This season, Forest have lost four points for breaching financial fair play charges. As a result, the club will look to cut their cloth accordingly in the summer and that will likely involve several players departing for pastures new.

The Reds have a number of loan players who also won’t be kept on. Now, it’s come to light that one of those is already in discussions over where he might head to play football next season.

Club now open talks with Nottingham Forest player Gonzalo Montiel

It’s fair to say that this one doesn’t come to much of a surprise. It was claimed recently that Forest had now made the decision not to sign Montiel this summer.

Now, according to journalist Damian Augusto Villagra, River Plate have opened talks with Montiel over the possibility of signing the right-back during the next transfer window.

Forest had agreed to sign Montiel for a sum of £9 million on the provision that the World Cup winner played in half of the club’s fixtures this season.

That is no longer possible and it’s been suggested that Forest won’t be adding Montiel to their ranks on a permanent basis during the transfer window.

River Plate are a club that sits closer to the heart of Montiel. He came through the youth ranks there and went on to make 140 appearances before signing for Sevilla.

Forest have made the right call over erratic player

Montiel hasn’t done bad when he’s been called on for Forest. He’s made 15 appearances in all competitions and has spent periods injured and simply not selected.

Steve Cooper didn’t seem to fancy him and it wasn’t until Espirito Santo arrived that Montiel really earned a proper crack in the team.

Montiel has enjoyed some good moments and he’s registered three assists during his time at the club – but the positive moments have come too infrequently.

Right now, the Reds have Neco Williams doing great things at right-back. Montiel did come on in the closing stages of Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham but he’s now nearing the end at Forest.

River Plate would likely be a quality club for Montiel to go to after Forest. He has a deep affection for the Argentinean outfit and he’d likely play far more football than he’s played this season.

Forest should be well-stocked still when Montiel leaves. Ola Aina can operate at right-back and at 22-years-old, Williams is capable of holding down that spot for many years just yet.
