'My opinion': Lewis McGugan claims Chris Wood wasn't the only Forest player to miss a big chance vs Tottenham

Nottingham Forest lost 3-1 to Tottenham on Sunday and Lewis McGugan believes one man simply had to score – and it wasn’t Chris Wood!

The Reds fell to a defeat in North London after a pretty underwhelming second 45 minutes that saw Tottenham climb off the canvas.

Forest equalised in the first half when Chris Wood scored his 13th goal of the season, cancelling out a Murillo own goal.

Second-half strikes saw Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro saw Tottenham home and Forest are left to wonder what might have been.

Wood was criticised by Gary Lineker after missing a sitter in the first half and it was a chance that seemed easier to put into the net than miss.

However, McGugan now believes that another player should have scored during the defeat at Tottenham over the weekend.

Lewis McGugan says one Nottingham Forest man should have scored against Tottenham

Well, it’s another player aside from Wood who has come in for some questioning from McGugan after the Tottenham game.

The chance that Wood missed came when Ryan Yates produced a tame effort despite having time to pick a spot for his shot.

McGugan has spoken of his shock that Wood missed the rebound but ultimately, he’s questioned Yates in that moment too.

He told theForest Focus podcast: “It was a bit of a strange one. The more times you see it you kind of wonder what his thought process was. It’s a really strange one. He has to score.

“I think even if you look before that, the Ryan Yates chance from the edge of the area. From a midfield player, I think you probably have to score that so that’s just my opinion as a midfield player, when you get a free shot like that in the middle of the area, you’ve got to put that away.”

Yates has to start justifying team selection

Nobody has ever doubted the tenacity, endeavour and work rate that Yates brings to the Forest team, but is it enough?

With Danilo, Nicolas Dominguez and Ibrahim Sangare all in the midfield ranks at the City Ground, Yates has to start bringing more to the team.

His effort on Sunday was tame beyond belief and in truth, it was another gilt-edged chance that he’s missed to open his Premier League account.

Yates can add something to the Forest squad at this level but he must start offering more on the pitch when he starts games.

McGugan is right to question whether or not the Forest midfielder should have scored at the weekend and had he been on the pitch, he’d have probably taken the net off from there.
