£68m man they wanted before: Five players Chelsea should look at in Champions League quarter-finals - opinion

The quarter-finals of the Champions League are upon us, and it’s the first year in quite some time where Chelsea won’t be involved.

Even when they were struggling last season under a combination of Graham Potter and Frank Lampard, they still found themselves in the last eight of Europe.

It’ll be a case of watching from home this season though, although there may be some at the club analysing the fixtures more in depth than others.

The Chelsea Chronicle has put together a list of five players the club could consider signing who are featuring in the Champions League this week.

The left-back position is one which has been affected by its fair share of injuries this season, and reports have stated they are looking for a new option.

Just across London tonight, Alphonso Davies is likely to be an action against Arsenal, which will present a good opportunity to see exactly how he does against top calibre attacking players.

He will also be hoping the game allows him an opportunity to show off his attacking skillset as well.

Ferland Mendy

Similarly to Davies, the Blues have been linked with Ferland Mendy from Real Madrid.

While it has been claimed recently the Spanish side have no interest in selling him, they will no doubt be seeing how he copes with arguably the best team in world football tonight.

Chelsea are so far undefeated against Manchester City this season. Can Real Madrid do the same?

Matthijs de Ligt

Chelsea have today been linked with the signing of Matthijs de Ligt, after he has proven to be a less popular asset for Bayern Munich than expected.

The Blues have looked to sign him before, particularly when Thomas Tuchel was in charge of the club.

It remains to be seen how he deals with Kai Havertz, a player who he could well have been Chelsea teammates with.

Jules Kounde

If Chelsea want a potential cut-price option this summer, Barcelona could well be the place to go.

They have also made efforts in the past to sign Jules Kounde, who is reportedly becoming more available for a quick transfer away too.

They will take on PSG tomorrow in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Ian Maatsen

A player many at the club know very well, because he actually already plays for them.

It looks as if Ian Maatsen doesn’t have a future at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino, but it also feels at this stage like Chelsea do not have a future under Mauricio Pochettino.

If a new manager is being considered, this is the perfect chance for him to show selling him permanently would be a mistake.
