Report: Liverpool are now very keen on 'marvellous' forward Newcastle have considered signing

Newcastle United may not have it easy when it comes to signing players this summer.

Not only will FFP limitations likely continue to restrict what Newcastle are able to do in the transfer market but rival interest may complicate matters.

Indeed, it was something the club encountered last summer, too.

James Maddison ultimately joined Tottenham despite Newcastle’s apparent interest in him.

With Newcastle reportedly on the hunt for a new forward this summer, rival interest is seemingly likely to emerge again.

Eddie Howe is said to want a player capable of playing across the frontline and may be looking to replace Miguel Almiron, should he leave St James’ Park as has been predicted.

Liverpool, however, are now very keen on a reported Newcastle target.

Liverpool now want to sign Newcastle transfer target Nico Williams

According to Sport Lens, the Reds are lining up a move for Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

The 21-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle after impressing in Spain.

Williams was part of the squad who won the Copa del Rey this weekend and has previously been hailed for his “marvellous” speed.

It is believed the Anfield giants are interested in the forward – who has scored six goals while registering 14 assists in 30 appearances across all competitions this season – as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Nico Williams transfer: Salary might prove a problem this summer

During a period in which Newcastle are still dealing with FFP problems, Williams may not be the most realistic signing.

Not only are Bilbao likely to demand a big fee but the player’s salary could prove an issue.

Back in January, David Ornstein of The Athletic suggested his demands would have been enough to put free-spending Chelsea off, so it would appear unlikely for Newcastle too.
