Three things we learned as Leicester City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Millwall in the Championship

Leicester City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Championship strugglers Millwall on Tuesday evening in a dull affair.

Enzo Maresca‘s side huffed and puffed but failed to create many chances aside from a couple towards the end.

With Leeds United drawing at home to Sunderland, The Foxes missed a massive opportunity to move five points clear of the third-placed West Yorkshire outfit.

City were sloppy in possession and were punished in the second half when Wout Faes gave the ball away before Ryan Longman curled home a beauty, which turned out to be the match-winner.

Here are three things we learned from the clash…

Yunus Akgun needs to improve his decision-making

Yunus Akgun was awarded the chance to start only his eighth league game of the season but he didn’t take his chance.

The left-footed winger lacked quality and failed to play through Jamie Vardy in the first half, evincing his poor decision-making.

Akgun rarely tried to beat his man and whilst he was neat in possession for the most part, he didn’t create anything of note.

Abdul Fatawu came on in his place in the second half and was much more effective.

Leicester City look more dangerous with Callum Doyle in the side

It’s not often that a defender makes a team look more threatening going forward but that was absolutely the case for Manchester City loanee Callum Doyle.

The 20-year-old was so assured in possession and always looked to play the forward option wherever possible.

In a game where City lacked a spark, Doyle was perhaps one of the only outlets as he delivered a few wicked balls into the box.

He didn’t put a foot wrong defensively, too.

Maybe Leicester City aren’t over their blip

Many thought Leicester were over their blip having put together two wins in two heading into this clash.

But it seems not, as a lot of the cracks that have been on show in recent weeks re-emerged and it’ll certainly be a real concern for Maresca with five crucial games of the season to play.

City were pretty toothless in attack and defensively they were shaky when Millwall decided to apply pressure.

With an away trip to Plymouth Argyle on Friday, they need a reaction as they can’t afford to let Ipswich Town and Leeds back in.

Perhaps Maresca should consider resting a number of his key players, of which many looked some way off the pace this evening.

A telling few weeks await Leicester.
