Matty Fryatt thought 25-year-old Leicester player really struggled vs Millwall last night

Leicester City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Millwall in the Championship on Tuesday evening, denting their automatic promotion hopes.

Enzo Maresca‘s side dominated possession for much of the encounter but they failed to carve out enough chances to win the game.

Leeds United failed to defeat Sunderland, which kept City at the summit of the Championship table, with the title still in their hands.

Notwithstanding that, it was still a bitterly disappointing evening for Leicester in the capital and former Foxes forward Matty Fryatt explained where it all went wrong.

Speaking on the BBC Radio Leicester When Your Smiling podcast, Fryatt thought it was too congested in the middle, which stifled the creativity of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

“There were a few runs from Wilfred Ndidi when Mavididi tried to slide him on this side but it was sort of congested in that middle,” he said.

“Their shape was good, two banks of four. The front two working hard for Millwall. It didn’t play into Kiernan’s hand, either.”

Fryatt continued: “For me, he’s better with space to run into and he can find himself into those positions once it’s been created.

“He’s not naturally goes in the pocket, creates a bit of magic. It’s more when it opens up.”

It was a systematic change from Maresca that seemed to have a negative impact on Dewsbury-Hall’s performance.

He implemented a three-man midfielder, which as Fryatt eluded to, just seemed to create traffic in the middle.

Enzo Maresca needs to revert back to usual formation v Plymouth Argyle

The Italian head coach was experimental last night and it didn’t pay off.

Leicester’s usual fluidity going forward just wasn’t there at all and they weren’t able to unlock their usual outlets.

Against Plymouth Argyle on Friday, Maresca should revert back to his tried and tested shape, which allows Dewsbury-Hall more space to create.

Further, Wilfred Ndidi can move back to the right side of midfield, which is most definitely his best position.

On the left, he was forced to use his weaker foot and it really affected his end product in the final third.

A telling few weeks await Leicester and they must return to winning ways on Friday, with Leeds and Ipswich Town still gunning for top spot.
