Next Ukrainian counteroffensive will be more successful, Zelenskyy says

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The Ukrainian leader admitted that last year's attempted counteroffensive against Russia was "not so successful" and promised that the next attempt to strike back at Russia would show more progress.

Without going into details, Zelenskyy hinted that the previous offensive was "sabotaged from within." He added that "the Russians knew where we were going to attack" and promised that "history will tell" how this happened.

The next Ukrainian counteroffensive, according to Zelenskyy, "must give us some results."

But it would be a serious mistake if Ukraine's allies abandoned their commitments to the war effort, Zelenskyy warned.

Ukraine's new counteroffensive

If the situation on the battlefield is stabilized, Ukraine will be able to arm and train new brigades in the rear to launch a new counteroffensive this year, Zelenskyy said earlier in an interview with The Washington Post.

Zelenskyy said later in an interview with German newspaper Bild that Ukraine has a plan for a counteroffensive, but that it needs weapons, including from the United States. He admitted that Russia has more manpower and weapons, but nonetheless expressed optimism that Ukraine could gain an advantage due to the quality of its weapons.

However, currently, the Ukrainian military has only enough artillery munitions for defensive actions, he added.

Ground Forces Commander Oleksandr Pavliuk also spoke about plans for a counteroffensive after the situation at the front stabilizes.

"Our task is to stabilize the front line, destroy the enemy as much as possible, regroup as much as possible to withdraw units that need to be replenished, create a strike group, and conduct counterattacks this year," he said on March 6.
