'We need you': Barry Bannan sends 'brilliant' message to Sheffield Wednesday fans after Norwich draw

Barry Bannan has taken to social media to address Sheffield Wednesday fans ahead of an important weekend.

Barry Bannan continued his vital role in Sheffield Wednesday’s midfield last night, as they came from behind to snatch a point against Norwich City.

The Owls found themselves 2-0 down inside only 16 minutes after a terrible defensive display, but four half-time substitutions swiftly turned things around.

Having only previously scored from six set pieces all season, Wednesday popped up with two in one game as both Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith got on the scoresheet.

The hosts now sit in 22nd place, separated from safety only by goal difference at the bottom of the Championship.

They now have four cup finals coming up as they look to finally claw their way out of the relegation zone, with Bannan remaining captain in the middle of the park.

The 34-year-old has now taken to social media and is looking straight ahead to this weekend’s meeting with Stoke City, pleading with fans to continue ‘driving’ the team on.

Alongside photos of the draw at Hillsborough, Bannan wrote on Instagram: “Character and fight against a very good team got us a good point in the end. Onto Saturday let’s finish the week and make it a good one. Support last night brilliant thank you once again and we need you all again Saturday driving us on.”

Ageing like a fine wine

Despite turning 35 this year and having to take the step back up to the Championship, Barry Bannan has remained a ‘vital ‘player under Danny Rohl.

The midfielder put on another captain’s performance last night – completing the most accurate passes on the home side (37), making two successful tackles (2) and the joint most interceptions on the pitch (3).

Bannan is so important to this team on and off the pitch, and while there has been talk and uncertainty around his future, it seems like a no-brainer to keep him on – that is if he was willing to take a pay cut.
