Chelsea fans are all saying the same thing after watching Ian Maatsen in the Champions League last night

Ian Maatsen had a night to forget last night as he took part in his first ever Champions League quarter-final whilst on loan from Chelsea.

The Dutchman started for Borussia Dortmund, who will have perhaps seen the side of the draw they have found themselves on as a real opportunity to reach the next round and perhaps beyond.

While they are certainly not out of the tie, they were defeated 2-1 last night by Atletico Madrid.

Maatsen himself played a key role in his side conceding their first goal of the evening, with his pass across goal going astray and straight to the goalscorer.

A video showcasing the mistake has also surfaced, with Chelsea fans likely not too impressed with what they had seen from their loanee.

It feels as if those taking to Twitter were all saying the same thing last night, with them perhaps stating it is not as big a mistake as many have made out for him to not feature for the first team at Stamford Bridge.

One user said: “Love Maatsen but he’s shown extreme weakness in the last 3 games for dortmund. Bullied in the air and nowhere near aggressive enough. Chelsea fans won’t mention that though because it means Poch was right. (Very good on the the ball though. Passing range is quality).”

Another added: “Chelsea fans ignoring Maatsen mistake gifting Atletico a goal in CL. His 3rd at BvB, but forget they don’t watch matches just wait for Bundesliga highlights to hype him up.”

A third stated: “He’s been mid Just we love to hype our own.”

Another claimed: “And to think that there are Chelsea fans crying for “Ian Maatsen” hey, if someone gives us 25-30 million for this little boy we have to send it with everything and bow.”

Finally, one tweeted: “Those fans always overvalue those who are not there. After what we have seen, I hope they do not continue with this narrative that Maatsen is great for shining in an undemanding league like the Bundesliga.”

The left-back position is one that certainly feels like it could be strengthened at Stamford Bridge, with the current options also struggling with their fitness.

Ben Chilwell in particular is a player who is only really ever available half the time right now, and this will no doubt be frustrating for a manager looking to build a sturdy backline.

It also remains to be seen if Mauricio Pochettino is replaced as Chelsea manager, and the new man at the helm actually takes a liking to Maatsen.
