'I sat there': James Maddison shares how he feels after watching Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday night

Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison has now been discussing how he felt when watching Arsenal in the Champions League this week.

It’s been an odd season for Spurs in that respect, with both Ange Postecoglou and James Madidson arriving to no European football.

Of course, with fifth position in the Premier League likely to be a Champions League qualification spot this season, and with Tottenham in a strong position to finish ahead of Aston Villa anyway, that should soon change.

Postecoglou’s side will expect to the Champions League, which could in-turn be crucial to their summer spending.

The Tottenham boss recently spoke about not wanting players who only wanted to sign for the club on that basis, but it will certainly make things easier regardless.

And with that in mind, James Maddison has now shared his honest thoughts on how it felt to watch Arsenal in the competition this week.

Mikel Arteta’s side weren’t victorious against Bayern Munich as hoped, but will still be optimistic heading into next week’s second leg at the Allianz Arena.

Speaking on Sky Sports News today, Maddison suggested that he felt a little bit jealous whilst watching Tuesday’s matches, fueling his ambition to change that for next campaign.

He explained: “As a player, you don’t always share the same things but we want to be in the Champions League.

“I sat there last night [Tuesday] watching two huge quarter final clashes and it’s a competition that we at Tottenham need to be in.”

Of course, Spurs do look almost certain to be playing in the competition next season, but questions do have to be asked in regards to their squad being ready.

Despite all the excellent attacking play by the club right now, which is often being inspired by Brennan Johnson, the club are still conceding far too many chances and goals.

If you compare Tottenham to Arsenal this season for example, Spurs have allowed an xGa of 53.57 in comparison to Arsenal’s 24.80 (understat).

It’s a huge difference, and whilst the respective projects are at different stages, something will need to change – be it in midfield or in defence.

All that being said, Tottenham have now been linked with a exciting midfield signing for the coming summer.
