Tottenham are reportedly leading race to sign 'unique' £68m talent that has been compared to Rodri

Ange Postecoglou’s work in the market at Tottenham has been second to none so far with many of his additions paying off – and now, Spurs are said to be leading the race for potentially, the next Rodri.

James Maddison has proved to be a bargain buy at £40m, while Micky van de Ven was a relative unknown on these shores before Postecoglou lured him to North London from Wolfsburg. An inspired signing.

So much so, that Ledley King recently questioned why no other club had shown any interest in the Dutch defender. Guglielmo Vicario, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson all look like excellent bits of business.

This summer then, there will be a trust placed in Postecoglou when he delves into the market. Spurs will be busy as depth is required ahead of a Champions League campaign next season. Midfielders, needed.

Tottenham leading Liverpool and Newcastle in £68m race

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is expected to leave the club after admitting he is not happy at Spurs, and with his contract due to expire in 2025. Juventus are said to be really keen on luring the Danish ace to the Serie A.

One player Spurs are targeting is Frankfurt and Sweden teenager Hugo Larsson. Reports claim Tottenham are leading the race to land Larsson ahead of Liverpool and Newcastle, as he shines in the Bundesliga.

Frankfurt want a whopping £68m for Larsson, who already has four caps for Sweden. The teen has been in excellent form since joining Frankfurt from Malmo last summer, clocking up 32 appearances this term.

‘Unique’ Larsson compared to Manchester City’s Rodri

The Bundesliga’s website delivered a profile piece on Larsson, and compared the Swedish wonderkid to that of Man City’s Rodri, who is considered to be the best player in the world in the holding midfield role.

They say, under the title ‘Plays a bit like Rodri’: “As well as an expert breaker-up-of-play, he also has the technical ability to break lines and thread through balls. Larsson’s 6’1” frame gives him great presence.

“His athleticism is eye-catching, underlined by his rapid turn of pace – a unique trait for a player often seen shielding those further back. There are shades of holding midfielder Rodri in Larsson’s game.”

A fee of £68m might be an expensive outlay on Larsson, but if he turns out to be anything like Rodri, then Spurs have really got to consider a move. He could be one of the world’s best, in the next few years.
