'I think': Glen Johnson tells Chelsea the new signing they need to prioritise even more than a striker

Chelsea are sleepwalking into a second consecutive season of mediocrity, so we expect fans will want to see some action taken in this summer’s transfer window.

Despite such huge spending under these owners, there’s still significant holes in the Blues squad. In particular, it’s a young and inexperienced group crying out for some more leaders in its dressing room.

The Blues sit ninth in the Premier League table and face the prospect of two years without European football, so something has got to change quickly.

Chelsea plans for the summer

There’s already frequent transfer rumours on how Chelsea will go about strengthening the squad this summer at Stamford Bridge.

So, which areas will Mauricio Pochettino’s side focus on improving?

The Sun claimed last month that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is focused on the club signing a prolific centre-forward in the upcoming summer window.

Meanwhile, journalist Ben Jacobs reported via GiveMeSport last week that Chelsea have always been planning to sign a new centre-back this summer.

On top of that, GiveMeSport also claims that Pochettino has identified that Chelsea will need to eventually sign a better goalkeeper to be their long-term number one.

Glen Johnson urges Blues to sign centre-backs first

Glen Johnson, the two-time Premier League champion with Chelsea, has given some transfer advice to his former club.

He insists that the Blues should be focusing transfer efforts on new and improved central defenders. Despite constant talk from supporters about getting a new No 9, he believes the heart of defence simply must get better.

When asked by Squawka which positions Chelsea need to strengthen as a priority, Johnson said: “Probably the centre halves. I’d probably say that’s the place they need to sure up more importantly than anywhere else, but then I think they still need a couple of midfielders and still a top striker. But yeah, if I could only sign two players I’d probably get two centre halves.”
