Why Danny Rohl may disappoint Sheffield Wednesday fans with one player selection v Stoke - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl looks set to have some tough selection calls for the game against Stoke City.

Sheffield Wednesday gave fans another memorably night under the Hillsborough lights on Tuesday.

The Owls came from two goals behind to draw 2-2 with Norwich City, with Canaries boss David Wagner likening Rohl to Tony Pulis after full-time.

The Owls pummelled the Norwich City penalty area with all kinds of deliveries, eventually scoring from two corners for what feels like the first time this season.

It was a typical game of two halves and a tale of two different Sheffield Wednesday sides.

Rohl made four changes at half-time, bringing on Callum Paterson, Will Vaulks, Pol Valentin, and Kristian Pedersen.

And all four played their part in the comeback.

But the changes in personnel also came with a change in shape, with Rohl reverting from a back four to a back-five; two formations he’s chopped and changed in recent weeks.

And whilst the squad selection might give Rohl a few headaches ahead of Stoke, so too will the change in shape.

Why Callum Paterson could start on the bench vs Stoke City

Rohl’s two favoured formations at Sheffield Wednesday are 4-2-3-1 and 5-2-2-1.

The back-four is often deployed, and to mixed results in recent weeks, when the Owls want to go a bit more attacking, and then the back-five when the Owls want to soak up some pressure.

But the latter worked in a more attacking way against Norwich.

Being wider in their shape, Wednesday were able to pen back Norwich and keep them in their half.

But against a lowly Stoke City side who sit in 19th and just three points ahead of Sheffield Wednesday, Rohl might fancy the 4-2-3-1 shape, despite its flaws being evident in the first half vs Norwich.

And should Rohl deploy the 4-2-3-1 shape, it could mean Paterson missing out on a starting spot.

The Callum Paterson conundrum at Sheffield Wednesday

There’ll be a clamour of fans urging Rohl to start Paterson vs Stoke.

He was influential in the Norwich comeback, showing his physical attributes and also his drive, getting forward at every chance.

He started at left wing-back and so if Rohl plays with a back-four vs Stoke, it would surely mean Paterson starting on the bench, as he isn’t a left-back.

In the left wing position, expect Anthony Musaba.

He’s still a very important player for the Owls despite some wobbly form in recent weeks and with Paterson having just returned from knee surgery, Rohl will surely be wary of throwing him into the XI so soon.

That, and Paterson may be better-used as an impact player whilst he’s still getting back to full fitness, so he could have another similar impact against Stoke this weekend.

Kick off is at 3pm.
