'Was fantastic': Sheffield Wednesday ace out on loan earns MOTM award with 8/10 display last night

It’s been a pretty positive week so far for Sheffield Wednesday, and for one of their out-on-loan players too.

A determined second half performance against Norwich City on Tuesday day counteracted the first half performance, and its two-goal deficit.

Sheffield Wednesday hosted and eventually drew 2-2 with the Canaries in a game that could easily have ended with a heavy Norwich City win.

David Wagner’s side missed their chances but Danny Rohl‘s men took theirs, scoring twice after the break and with both goals coming from corners.

Callum Paterson was many fans’ Man of the Match that night.

And another Sheffield Wednesday man earned the Man of the Match award on Tuesday night.

January saw several players leave Hillsborough, with all of them leaving early on.

John Buckley and Devis Vasquez both saw their loan deals cut short whilst Tyreeq Bakinson and George Byers both went out on loan.

Bakinson joined Charlton Athletic and has since featured 13 times in League One, scoring once, whilst Byers joined promotion hopefuls Blackpool.

And the 27-year-old Byers has shown his class since arriving at Bloomfield Road.

He’s played 13 times in League One and has one assist to his name, though he’s been pulling the strings in the midfield, whilst also showing a great defensive game.

He was the Seasiders’ Man of the Match in their 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night.

Blackpool Gazette gave him an 8/10 rating, writing:

“George Byers was fantastic in the centre of the park for the Seasiders at both ends. He threatened the Fleetwood defence on a number of occasions and built on his good display against Cambridge.”

Byers also starred in his side’s 1-0 win over Garry Monk’s Cambridge United last weekend.

As per Sofascore, Byers made 62 passes vs Fleetwood (most of anyone) with 93 touches (second most), winning 6 out of 12 duels, and Byers made 6 defensive actions; 2 clearances, 2 interceptions, and 2 tackles.

Why George Byers might leave Hillsborough this summer

Byers is one of the many out of contract in the summer.

Right now, everyone’s future seems to have been put on hold as the club battle against relegation from the Championship.

But whatever the outcome, it feels as though Byers might be moved on.

For whatever reason, Byers fell out of favour under Rohl.

His style didn’t totally suit him and if the Owls stay up, and Rohl stays of course, Byers will surely either be released, or opt against a new deal as he may not have a future at the club under Rohl.

And if the Owls are relegated, it may still be the case that Byers favours a move elsewhere, due to his treatment at the club this season.

Anything can change, though, and Byers may well fancy returning to S6 and reminding everyone of his abilities.

He’s certainly doing that at Blackpool and if his decent form continues, he could well have many options in the summer transfer window.
