Who does Trump want on his hush-money jury? You might be shocked

Days after a New York judge expanded a gag order on Donald Trump to curtail "inflammatory” speech, the former president tested its limits, Wednesday, April 10, 2024, by disparaging Daniels and Michael Cohen, two key witnesses in his upcoming criminal hush money trial as liars.(AP Photo/Markus Schreiber, File)

The first of Donald Trump’s four criminal prosecutions heads to trial on Monday and jury selection is set to begin.

And who will Trump’s lawyers be looking for?

“Mr. Trump’s lawyers want a jury that includes younger Black men and white working-class men, particularly public employees like police officers, firefighters and sanitation workers. Those who have had bad experiences with the legal system will also be prized by the defense, which has cast the case as politically motivated,” according to a report from The New York Times.

Trump is accused of falsifying his company’s records to hide the nature of payments to his former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, who helped Trump bury negative stories during his 2016 campaign. Cohen’s activities included paying porn actor Stormy Daniels $130,000 to suppress her claims of an extramarital sexual encounter with Trump years earlier.

Trump pleaded not guilty last year to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He has denied having a sexual encounter with Daniels. His lawyers argue the payments to Cohen were legitimate legal expenses.
