'I'd drive him': Stan Collymore says Aston Villa should sign 'astounding' talent let go by Manchester United

Aston Villa might be flying under Unai Emery but Stan Collymore thinks a former Manchester United player could help them out further.

Villa are doing brilliantly under Emery and won against Lille in Europe last night to continue their fine season.

As it stands, they’re very much still in the race to land a Champions League place as well and Unai Emery is looking for one final push from his team.

Of course, whatever the result of the season is, Emery has earned the right to be backed in the summer transfer window to try and kick things on even further.

For Villa, that means being careful in the market and picking and choosing exactly where they need strengthening.

And according to Stan Collymore, there is one man currently playing his football lower down the Premier League table who he’d love Villa to sign in the summer.

Stan Collymore wants Aston Villa to sign former Manchester United man Teden Mengi

Like many youngsters, Teden Mengi moved on from Manchester United in the summer in search of first-team football.

Since making that decision, he’s become a key man for Luton and is a key reason behind them having a chance at staying in the Premier League.

And writing in his latest column for CaughtOffside, ex-Villa forward Stan Collymore has said he would drive the young defender to Villa Park if Emery wanted him.

“Sure, he’s not long left Old Trafford to ply his trade at Luton but I can’t be the only one who’s noticed that he has all of the background, the ambition to leave United at 21 to go it alone. I’ve been really impressed by his performances and I’m sure he’ll be on several “big clubs” radars.

“He’s played for England at every age level so will have had an A+ club and international grounding. Personally, I’d drive him to Villa Park tomorrow if Unai Emery fancies it,” Collymore said.

Mengi has won plenty of praise for his performances with Luton this season.

“For a younger player to step up, come away from home, out of his comfort zone and perform at the highest level as he has is astounding. I’m not surprised with anything he does, but perhaps I was surprised by how quickly he adapted to his surroundings and his team-mates,” his manager Rob Edwards lauded earlier this season.

Man United, then, could well end up regretting the decision to lend Teden Mengi go.
